Are Toys from China Safe
Are Toys from China Safe? Here Is What Can Be Checked
We will not tell you our toys are safe. We will tell you what is on file and what is not.
Open prices per unit and per carton. No registration, no sales rep, minimum order total 2,000 CNY (≈ $313), no company required — you can buy as an individual. Both prices — per unit and per carton — are open before you order.
Ask whether Chinese toys are safe and you get two kinds of answer. Large publications tell you they are dangerous, because fear travels. Sellers tell you theirs are safe, because that is what a seller says. Neither answer helps you decide about the specific toy you are about to buy a carton of.
The question only has a real answer per item, and the answer is a document or the absence of one. So this page publishes what is actually on file across our catalogue, including the part that does not flatter us.
Measured
11.5% — and We Publish It Anyway
Of 385,341 items in our catalogue, 44,336 carry at least one test certificate on file from the factory. On the other 337,461 there is nothing, and the product card shows an empty field.
By standard, counting each item once even where it holds several documents: EN71 on 36,137 items, REACH on 33,088, ASTM F963 on 24,034, CPSIA on 25,955, CPC on 20,465, CE on 20,175, UKCA on 7,907.
These are counted from our own database, not estimated. The full list of what ships with every consignment and what is sent on request is on our documents and customs page.
The limits
What a Certificate Is — and What It Is Not
It is: evidence that one sample of one model passed one set of tests on one date, at a named laboratory.
It is not: a guarantee that every piece in your carton matches that sample. It is not transferable to another model from the same factory. And it is not a market clearance — your own country decides what it accepts.
The practical test is simple: a document tied to a product number means something; a document tied to a factory and shown on everything it makes means almost nothing.
The wrong variable
«Made in China» Is Not the Question
Most of the world’s toys are moulded in a few Chinese industrial districts — including the ones that arrive in European and American boxes with familiar names on them. The same district, often the same street, sometimes the same machines.
So the country tells you almost nothing about the toy. What differs between two toys from the same district is whether anybody tested that model, whether the report exists, and whether the seller will show it to you or talk about it instead.
That is why our cards name the factory on all 385,341 items. Not as a courtesy — because a model that worked can then be reordered from the same source, and a model that did not can be traced.
What we do
Acceptance Inspection Is Not a Lab Test
Every consignment comes to one warehouse in China and the batch is checked line by line with photo and video before the cartons are taped: quantity, model, colour, packaging, visible defects. What is wrong goes back to the factory while the goods are still in China.
That catches the wrong item, the missing pieces and the crushed box. It does not catch what only a laboratory catches. We separate the two on purpose, because sellers who blur them are selling reassurance.
Practical
If Testing Matters for Your Market
Order from the items that already carry it. 44,336 items do, and the card shows which standards.
Or have the specific model tested. For a production run AJT, an ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory historically linked with our partner group’s founding family, works in the same Chenghai ecosystem, and testing can be arranged as part of the order at your cost. For one carton off the shelf it is rarely worth the money, and we will tell you so.
And decide before the goods move. Testing after a shipment has landed protects nobody — the money is already spent and the stock is already yours.
