What we measured about buying toys from China
Every article below is built on a figure counted from our own catalogue — carton dimensions, test documents, factory records — not on industry commentary. Each one also says what its number does not prove.
Articles
- How to Import Toys from China — Step by Step, with Real Numbers
Importing toys from China step by step: choosing models, minimums, production and inspection in China, freight modes with real transit ranges for 62 destinations, documents, and the two places first-time importers lose money.
- Are Toys from China Safe? Here Is What Can Be Checked
An honest answer with our own numbers: 44,336 of 385,341 catalogue items carry a test certificate from the factory, which means most do not. What a certificate proves, what it does not, and the four things a buyer can check without trusting anybody.
- What a Wholesale Toy Supplier Actually Does
What a wholesale toy supplier does between your order and your shelf, broken down by task, and what each task costs if you do it yourself. Three kinds of company call themselves a supplier and they are not interchangeable.
- How to Find a Toy Manufacturer in China
The mechanics of finding a toy manufacturer: trade fairs, marketplaces, sourcing agents and catalogues that name the factory. The one question that separates a mould owner from a reseller, and what to verify before money moves.
- Toys Made in China — Why There, and What It Means for the Price
Why most of the world’s toys are moulded in a few Chinese districts: tooling cost, cluster supply chains and run length. What the label tells you about a toy, and what it does not.
- The China Toy Industry — Measured, Not Estimated
The Chinese toy industry from inside one catalogue: 5,233 factories, 38 categories, 385,341 items, the price distribution, the certificate share and the calendar that stops production twice a year. No market-size estimates — we do not have them.
- Five Ways a First Toy Order from China Goes Wrong
The five failures that actually cost money on a first wholesale toy order from China: the minimum per factory, volumetric weight, the factory calendar, ordering deep instead of broad, and finding out about defects after landing.
- Toy MOQ Explained — Production Run or Carton?
What minimum order quantity actually means in the Chinese toy trade: the difference between a factory production run and a factory carton, why carton sizes are 24, 36, 48, 72, 96 and 120, and what it costs to test a model.
- Who Actually Makes Your Toys
The picture of a vast Chinese toy factory is wrong for most of what reaches a toy shop. Measured in our own supplier register: the median factory supplies 39 products, 358 of them supply exactly one, and the ten largest account for 2% of the catalogue.
- Which Chinese Toys Are Actually Tested
Certificate coverage across 385,341 catalogue items, by category. Bath toys 28.9%, rattles 21.3% — keychains 0.7%, balloons 0.8%. A forty-fold gap, and it is not random.
- Toy Certificates by Market
What documents the US, EU, UK, Gulf, Canada and EAEU require for imported toys — and how many items in our catalogue already carry them. 30,639 US-ready, 34,171 EU-ready, 7,907 UKCA, and zero with EAC.
- What You Actually Pay for When You Ship Toys
Measured on 316,704 real cartons: every toy carton weighs about the same on the scale — 16 to 23 kg — but bills between 23 and 55 kg by air. Why, and how to choose the mode before the invoice teaches you.
- Shipping Toys from China to the United States
We counted our own catalogue: 14,790 items carry a European toy certificate and no American one. And the certificate America wants is one no factory can issue for you — by law it is yours.
- Oversized Toys from China
We measured the toys themselves, not the cartons: 141,427 items, median longest side 23 cm, and only 2,859 reach a metre. The surprise is that a carton of metre-long toys bills less freight than a carton of small ones.
- Which Toys Are Easiest to Wholesale
Freight rides on volume, so it punishes cheap bulky toys, not expensive ones. We measured how many kilograms of billed weight travel with every ¥100 of goods, across 21 categories — and the spread is nearly sevenfold.
- Why Toy Shipments Get Held
We checked the dates on 42,045 factory test reports. 8,471 of our American ones were written before the version of ASTM F963 that is now mandatory — 35% of them. Paperwork does not fail by being absent. It fails by being the wrong paperwork.
- Wholesale Plush from China
Plush is one of the cheapest categories to freight and the second-worst documented in our catalogue: 5.9% of 9,278 items carry a factory test report. Inside the category the pattern is sharper still — and there is one question that sorts it.
- US Import Duty on Toys
The Harmonized Tariff Schedule sets the general rate for heading 9503 — dolls, toys, puzzles — at Free. The complications are elsewhere, and one of them is a rule about the age of the child.
- The Ten Factories Behind Most of Our Catalogue
Counted by factory number rather than by name: the ten suppliers with the most items on our shelves, from 415 to 1,287 products each. Eight of the ten have no test documents on file at all.
- Blind Box and Collectible Toys
Blind boxes cost 56% more than the average toy in our catalogue, ship for half the freight, and carry 3.6 times less paperwork. 1,979 items from 226 factories, measured.
- What «Educational» Actually Means
We cannot verify developmental claims, so we tested what the word predicts instead. It buys no price premium and changes nothing about freight — but it nearly doubles the odds of a test report, and with an age grading it quadruples them.
- Come and See the Toys
Our partner keeps a 15,000 m² showroom in Chenghai with more than 500,000 samples — more physical samples than our online catalogue has items. We meet buyers in Guangzhou and take them in.
- Do You Need Your Own Mould?
385,341 shapes have already been tooled and paid for by somebody else. Before you commission a mould, it is worth knowing how much of the work is already done.
