First Order Mistakes
Five Ways a First Toy Order from China Goes Wrong
Two cartons weigh the same on the scale. One is billed as 26 kg, the other as 11. That is failure number two of five.
Open prices per unit and per carton. No registration, no sales rep, minimum order total 2,000 CNY (≈ $313), no company required — you can buy as an individual. Both prices — per unit and per carton — are open before you order.
Two cartons leave the same warehouse on the same day. Both weigh 10 kg on the scale. One is billed for freight as 26.1 kg, the other as 10.9 kg. Nobody cheated and nothing was damaged — one box was mostly air.
That is failure number two of five, and it is the cheapest one to avoid: it takes a multiplication before you choose the freight mode. Almost nothing goes wrong on a first China order because somebody was dishonest. It goes wrong because of arithmetic that was done in the wrong order, or not at all.
What this article answers:
- Why twelve factories mean twelve minimum orders, and what replaces them
- Why the freight bill can exceed the invoice, with the multiplier for each category
- The two dates each year that no freight mode can recover
- Why twenty models at one carton each beats three cartons of one
- Why a defect found at your own warehouse is already yours
Every figure below is measured in our own catalogue of 385,341 items. We do not repeat numbers we have not counted ourselves.
Failure one
Twelve Factories Mean Twelve Minimums
A factory sells a production run, because the line has to be set up for your model. For a shop that needs twenty different things, going direct means meeting twenty such minimums — and the excess is paid in stock nobody asked for.
The number that prevents it: one carton per model; minimum order total 2,000 CNY (≈ $313). The median carton in our catalogue is 84 pieces; the six commonest sizes are 24, 36, 48, 72, 96 and 120. Twenty models at one carton each is a valid order.
Failure two
The Invoice Is Not the Cost
People cost the goods carefully and then meet the freight bill. Freight is charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight, and most toys are volumetric: they are air in a box.
The numbers that prevent it, measured on our own cartons — the multiple of real weight billed on air freight: beach and pool 2.61, dolls 2.42, plush 2.20, radio-controlled 1.99, sporting goods 1.75, cars 1.67, educational 1.33, arts and crafts 1.26, bubble toys 1.23, novelty 1.15, board games 1.12, keychains 1.09.
Follow one carton through. Take two cartons that both weigh 10 kg on the scale. The carton of inflatable pool toys is billed as 26.1 kg. The carton of keychains is billed as 10.9 kg. Same scale reading, two and a half times the freight. Nothing was negotiated and nothing went wrong — one box was mostly air.
That is why a ¥2 inflatable can cost more to move than a ¥10 keychain, and why the order of operations matters: decide the mode after this arithmetic, not before. Our calculator takes your own carton dimensions. We do not publish per-kilo rates, because a rate we have not verified for your lane becomes your landed-cost mistake.
Failure three
Two Dates Beat Any Freight Mode
Chinese factories stop twice a year, predictably, and both stoppages sit exactly where seasonal buyers need production.
Golden Week, 1–7 October — a full week closed in the middle of the autumn run-up. Chinese New Year, 6 February 2027 — roughly six weeks of disrupted output around it, with a slow restart.
The arithmetic that prevents it: count backwards from the date the shelf has to be full. Production 15–30 days, up to 45 in peak; consolidation and acceptance 3–5 days; then freight — sea to Europe 22–38 days, to the United States 18–40, rail to Europe 12–22, air 4–12. Our production calendar has the year.
Failure four
Three Cartons of One Thing Teaches Nothing
The instinct on a first order is to negotiate the best price on one item and buy it deep. It is the wrong instinct, because the thing you do not yet know is what your own customers pick up.
What prevents it: one carton per model and a low order total — from 2,000 CNY (≈ $313) — so breadth is cheap. Twenty models at one carton each costs the same money and returns an answer. Six weeks later your till tells you which five to buy deep — and that is information nobody could have sold you.
Failure five
A Defect Found at Your Warehouse Is Yours
When goods are wrong and already in your country, every option is bad: return freight costs more than the goods, the factory is a time zone away, and the season you bought for is running.
What prevents it: moving the check upstream. Goods from several factories come to one warehouse in China, and the batch is checked line by line with photo and video before the cartons are taped. What is wrong goes back while it is still in the country, which is the only place a problem is cheap to fix.
This is a check on what arrived — quantity, model, colour, packaging, visible damage. It is not a laboratory test, and we keep the two separate on purpose. The testing question is covered on our toy safety page.

Who Is Writing This
OPTTOYSCHINA is a wholesale platform operated by OPTTOYSCHINA LLP, Kazakhstan: catalog, requests and product selection. The seller — invoice, payment, export, documents and claims — is our manufacturing partner Yifeng Group, China. The catalogue holds 385,341 items from 5,233 factories, with the price published per piece and per carton, the carton quantity stated and the factory named on every card. 44,336 items carry at least one test certificate on file from the factory; on the rest the field is shown empty.
Our manufacturing partner is Yifeng Group (艺丰集团) in Chenghai, Shantou. The group has worked in Chenghai since 1992; its first plant, Shifeng Culture Development Co., Ltd, dates from that year and runs more than 35,000 m² of production area with an annual output of USD 60 M. AJT Testing Services Limited, founded in 2007 — the first private laboratory in eastern Guangdong to hold the Chinese national CCC accreditation for toy testing — is historically linked with the group’s founding family and works in the same Chenghai ecosystem; the group keeps a permanent 15,000 m² showroom in Shantou with more than 500,000 toy samples. See our factory partner page.
We have offices in Yiwu and Shantou and a consolidation warehouse in Guangzhou. Every batch is checked line by line with photo and video before the cartons are taped, and transit ranges are published for 62 destinations. Every number in this article is measured in our own catalogue — we do not repeat figures we have not counted.
