Oversized Toys

Oversized Toys from China

A carton of metre-long play tents bills less air freight than a carton of small toys. Here is why, and where the big toys actually live.

385,341 items in stock 5,233 factories 1 carton minimum order $0.84/kg freight from

Open prices per unit and per carton. No registration, no sales rep, minimum order total 2,000 CNY (≈ $313), no company required — you can buy as an individual. Both prices — per unit and per carton — are open before you order.

Oversized toys are a narrow slice of the Chinese toy trade, and it helps to know how narrow before you go looking. We measured the toys themselves — not their cartons — on 141,427 items in our catalogue: the median toy is 23 cm on its longest side, 15,274 reach 50 cm, and only 2,859 reach a metre. They concentrate in five places: play structures and tents, outdoor and sports goods, large ride-on and push cars, educational and STEM kits, and radio-controlled vehicles. The counterintuitive part is freight — a carton of metre-long toys bills 29.9 kg by air against 38.0 kg for a carton of small ones, because large toys fold, deflate and nest while small ones travel in blister packs full of air.

Ask where to buy oversized toys in China and you will be told "Chenghai" or "Yiwu", which is true and useless. The more helpful answer is how rare they are.

We measured the toys themselves — the product, not the box it ships in — across 141,427 items. The median toy is 23 cm on its longest side. Reach for a metre and the catalogue thins to 2,859 items, roughly one in fifty.

Then the numbers did something we did not expect, and it is the reason this article exists: the big ones are cheaper to fly.

What this article answers:

  • How large toys actually get, measured rather than described
  • Which five categories hold almost all of them
  • Why a carton of metre-long toys bills less freight than a carton of small ones — and where that stops being true
  • What a large toy costs at wholesale, and what the minimum looks like

Measured on 141,427 toys

The Median Toy Is 23 Centimetres

Most writing about toy sourcing describes sizes in adjectives. We have the numbers, because the toy’s own length, width and height are recorded on our cards alongside the carton’s.

Longest side of the toyItemsShare of measured
50 cm or more15,27410.8%
80 cm or more4,6273.3%
1 metre or more2,8592.0%
1.5 metres or more7440.5%

One item in fifty reaches a metre. That is the real shape of the market, and it is worth knowing before you plan a range around large goods: the selection is not thin because suppliers are hiding it, it is thin because that is how much of it exists.

Five categories

Almost All of Them Are in Five Places

Of the 2,859 items between one and three metres, this is where they sit:

CategoryItems over 1 mTypical longest side
Play structures & playsets1,039130 cm
Outdoor & sports toys514135 cm
Cars & vehicles330116 cm
Educational & STEM toys212122 cm
Toy weapons & blasters115116 cm
Early activity & infant toys109110 cm
RC & powered vehicles77126 cm
Role-play sets65103 cm

The pattern is not random. Every category on that list makes things that are large because a child has to get inside them, sit on them, or swing them — tents, tunnels, ride-ons, ball pits, large blasters, play mats. Nothing else in a toy catalogue has a reason to be a metre long.

Counterintuitive

The Big Ones Are Cheaper to Fly

Freight is billed on the greater of real weight and volumetric weight, and for toys the volume usually wins. So a metre-long toy ought to be punishing. It is not.

Toys 1–3 mToys under 50 cm
Billed weight per carton, air29.9 kg38.0 kg
Actual weight per carton22.0 kg20.0 kg
Pieces per carton2480
Billed weight per piece1.25 kg0.48 kg
Median wholesale price¥48.00¥10.60

Why. A play tent folds flat. A paddling pool deflates. A ride-on ships in parts and a ball pit is a bag of fabric. Large toys are designed to collapse, because the factory pays for the same container space you do. Small toys, meanwhile, arrive in blister packs and window boxes — rigid cardboard with air inside, stacked in a carton that is mostly nothing.

Where it stops being true. Per piece, the large toy carries 1.25 kg of billed weight against 0.48 — about 2.6 times more. Both numbers are honest and they answer different questions. If you are filling a container, the carton figure is the one that matters. If you are pricing a single item to a customer, it is the per-piece figure, and the large toy is the expensive one.

Practical

What a First Order of Large Goods Looks Like

The minimum does not change: one factory carton of one model; minimum order total 2,000 CNY (≈ $313). What changes is what a carton contains. Where a carton of small toys holds around 80 pieces, a carton of metre-plus goods holds around 24 — so the same single-carton minimum gives you a third of the units for roughly four and a half times the unit price.

In practice that makes large goods an unusually easy category to test. A carton of 24 play tents is a real assortment rather than a token sample, and it arrives as one box.

The dimensions of the toy and of its carton are printed on every card, so the arithmetic above can be redone for the specific item rather than the median. Our volumetric weight calculator takes those figures directly.

About us

Who Is Writing This

OPTTOYSCHINA is a wholesale platform operated by OPTTOYSCHINA LLP, Kazakhstan: catalog, requests and product selection. The seller — invoice, payment, export, documents and claims — is our manufacturing partner Yifeng Group, China. The catalogue holds 385,341 items from 5,233 factories, with the price published per piece and per carton, the carton quantity and the box dimensions stated, and the maker named on every card. The minimum is one factory carton of one model; minimum order total 2,000 CNY (≈ $313).

Our manufacturing partner is Yifeng Group (艺丰集团) in Chenghai, Shantou. The group has worked in Chenghai since 1992; its first plant, Shifeng Culture Development Co., Ltd, dates from that year and runs more than 35,000 m² of production area with an annual output of USD 60 M. AJT Testing Services Limited, founded in 2007, is historically linked with the group’s founding family and works in the same Chenghai ecosystem; the group keeps a permanent 15,000 m² showroom in Shantou with more than 500,000 toy samples. See our factory partner page.

Every batch is checked line by line with photo and video before the cartons are taped, and transit ranges are published for 62 destinations.

Honestly

Where These Measurements Run Out

One item in three, not all of them. The toy’s own dimensions are recorded on 141,427 of 385,341 items. Carton dimensions are far more complete at 316,704. Everything on this page is measured on the first set, so read the percentages as "of the measured catalogue", not of everything we sell.

We threw away a tail. 72 records claim a toy longer than three metres. Checked by hand they are decimal-point errors: a mini drone at 3,636 cm, a blind-box figure at 2,935, a magic cube at 1,424.5. Everything above 300 cm is excluded from every figure here. Nor does the tail stop cleanly at the cut — a pull-back car sits at exactly 300 cm and is plainly not three metres long. We mention it because a catalogue this size always has a tail like that, and a headline built on it would have been a better story and a false one.

And folded is not assembled. A further 531 items over a metre are more than two and a half times the longest side of their own carton. Most are genuinely collapsible; some are probably mismeasured. Where it matters to you, ask us for the carton photograph before you order.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you buy oversized toys in China?
From the same factory belt as everything else — Chenghai in Shantou for most of it — but from a small number of categories within it. In our catalogue the metre-plus items cluster in play structures and tents (1,039 items), outdoor and sports goods (514), cars and vehicles (330), educational and STEM kits (212) and radio-controlled vehicles (77). Very little else in a toy catalogue gets that big.
How big do toys actually get?
Measured on 141,427 items where the toy’s own dimensions are recorded, the median longest side is 23 cm. 15,274 items reach 50 cm, 2,859 reach a metre, and 744 reach a metre and a half. The largest credible items are play tents and tunnels at about 300 cm.
Is it expensive to ship large toys from China?
Less than you would guess per carton, more than you would guess per piece. A carton of metre-plus toys bills 29.9 kg by air; a carton of small toys bills 38.0 kg. Large toys fold, deflate and nest, so the carton is dense. But that carton holds 24 pieces against 80, so per piece the large toy carries 1.25 kg of billed weight against 0.48 — about 2.6 times more. Which figure matters depends on whether you are filling a container or pricing a single item.
What does a large toy cost wholesale?
The median metre-plus item in our catalogue is ¥48.00 per piece against ¥10.60 for an item under 50 cm. The minimum is the same as everything else — one factory carton of one model, order total from 2,000 CNY — but the carton holds fewer pieces, so a first order of large toys is a smaller number of units for a larger sum.
Can I get a whole container of oversized toys?
Yes, and it is the case where big toys make the most sense: they fill a container by volume long before they reach its weight limit, so sea freight treats them kindly. The arithmetic is in our article on what you actually pay for when you ship toys.
Do you have the dimensions of every toy?
No, and we would rather say so. The toy’s own measurements are recorded on 141,427 of 385,341 items — roughly one in three. The carton dimensions are far more complete, at 316,704. Where the item size is missing the card shows the carton and the piece count, and we can ask the factory for the rest before you order.
Are the very large listings reliable?
Mostly, with a known tail of errors we checked by hand. 72 records claim more than three metres, and spot-checking them shows misplaced decimal points — a mini drone listed at 3,636 cm, a magic cube at 1,424.5. We excluded everything above 300 cm from every figure on this page rather than let a decimal error inflate a headline.
