Advice for toy shops usually comes from people who have never had to decide what goes at the till. The decision is not «which supplier» — it is how to spend a fixed amount across a shelf that has to look full and turn over.

The order shape

Twenty Models, One Carton Each

With one carton per model, order total from 2,000 CNY as the minimum, breadth costs nothing extra. That changes the first order from a bet into a measurement: twenty models at one carton each, and in six weeks your own till tells you which five to reorder deep.

The median carton is 84 pieces and the median price ¥9.30, so a test carton of a median item is about ¥781 — roughly $122. Twenty of them is under $2,500 of goods and fills a considerable amount of shelf.

When to Order What

Work backwards from the date the shelf has to be full, and remember the factory calendar sits in the middle of it.

Back-to-school fills in August, so the order leaves China in June or early July. Halloween needs sea freight out of China in the first half of August. Christmas and New Year orders are placed in the autumn. Beach and pool is a spring order.

Two dates stop everything regardless of planning: Golden Week, 1–7 October, and Chinese New Year on 6 February 2027 with about six weeks of disrupted output around it. Our production calendar lays out the year.

The trap

Volumetric Weight Decides Small Orders

Freight is charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight, and most toys are volumetric. Measured on our own cartons: beach and pool 2.61 · dolls 2.42 · plush 2.20 · radio-controlled 1.99 · cars 1.67 · board games 1.12 · keychains 1.09.

For a shop-sized order this matters more than the goods discount anybody offers you. The calculator takes your own carton dimensions.

What should a toy store buy from China first?
Breadth at the cheap end and depth only where you already know it sells. They are low risk because nothing is left over that cannot be sold at an event later.
How many different models should I order?

The seasonal half has to be ordered backwards from the date — production 15–30 days, consolidation 3–5, then your freight lane, which for sea to Europe is 22–38 days.
What margin structure works?
We do not set your retail price and will not pretend to know your market. What we can tell you is the input: 52% of our 385,341 items are under ¥10 a piece and 92% under ¥50, with a median of ¥9.30. The pattern in most shops is that the till categories carry the highest percentage margin and the main shelf carries the cash.

What about freight for a small shop order?
Watch volumetric weight before you watch price. Freight is charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight, and measured on our own cartons beach and pool goods run 2.61 times their real weight on air, dolls 2.42, plush 2.20, against 1.09 for keychains. For a shop order that is not urgent, sea is almost always the honest mode.
Do I need a company to order?
